There have recently been unconfirmed reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) may conduct a major sweep in San Francisco. Please remember immigration officials are not allowed access to students or student information on school grounds without authorization from SFUSD’s Legal Office.

If you need immigration support, you may speak with a trusted adult at school. Your information will be kept confidential. Find legal help related to immigration from San Francisco Immigrant Support. If you encounter ICE officials in your home or community, or if you or someone you know is detained in San Francisco, you can call the Rapid Response hotline at 415-200-1548.

Thank you to all students who participated in this year's spelling bee. We ran out of chairs for all the audience members at this popular event and appreciate the support and respect both the audience and competitors gave each other throughout the competition.

Many thanks also to Mr. Stookey for hosting the competition and serving as pronouncer. Ms. Dunbar was the judge.

The runner-up is 7th grader Breanna Lau with the word "barrette" and the winner is 7th grader Dillon Lau with the word "marmalade". Dillon will be going on to represent Presidio at the citywide competition next month.

Congratulations to Dillon, Breanna, and all our dexterous spellers!

Dear Parents/Guardians:

An increased number of students are absent or have become ill at school with gastroenteritis.  Symptoms of gastroenteritis include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and/or stomach cramps.

All persons feeling sick should stay home.  Any person with diarrhea and/or vomiting should not return to school for 48 hours AFTER the symptoms have resolved.

The following measures are recommended to prevent the spread of illness:

• Frequent hand-washing

• Thorough cleaning and disinfecting of contaminated surfaces immediately after an episode of illness with a diluted bleach solution

• Immediate removal and washing of clothing or linens that may be contaminated with virus after an episode of illness (use hot water and soap)

• Washing and sanitizing all utensils after each use and not sharing utensils, food and drinks

Frequent hand-washing is being encouraged by school staff;  the custodial staff has taken appropriate steps to clean and disinfect classrooms and other areas in the school.

While almost all people who get gastroenteritis recover completely, it is important to prevent dehydration (severe loss of fluids) during this illness.

For more information refer to the Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, San Francisco Department of Public Health website at www.sfcdcp.org

For any questions, please consult our school district nurse or your child’s health provider.

With your support at home, we will be able to keep our school a healthy place to learn.

Sincerely,

Thomas Ekno

Principal

SFUSD continues to monitor the air quality index for the City and County of San Francisco for the week of Oct. 16. Principals are getting regular updates regarding precautions they should take, including bringing activities indoors when the air quality is orange or red and monitoring students with asthma and other health conditions. As the forecast changes during the school day or at any time during this week, an update will be provided to principals right away. Check the current the air quality index at airnow.gov.

Presidio Middle School’s AVID team encourages all families to support their students in taking Cornell Notes and using them as a study tool. Cornell Notes are a proven form of effective, organized two-column note-taking where the notes appear on the right-hand side of the page and key questions or terms relating to the notes are added in a column to the left. The notes are then summarized in the student’s own words at the end of the page. Cornell Notes are a proven study tool that allows a student to repeatedly engage with class material in a number of ways: note-taking, highlighting key terms and study questions, summarizing material and then returning to the notes to review and study them in the days following class and prior to a test or quiz. Research shows that students who return to material through their notes, after initially receiving information in class, can increase their memory and command of the material by up to 80%. In other words, reviewing Cornell Notes within ten minutes, 24 hours, and again 7 days later reduces the rate of forgetting. Cornell Notes are used in middle schools, high schools, colleges, and universities around the world.

AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. Advancement Via Individual Determination

San Francisco Unified School District officials are working closely with the Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Public Health to monitor the air quality situation in San Francisco. At this time, we continue to advise schools to conduct indoor activities during the school day. Schools will be open Friday, Oct. 13. If San Francisco's air quality is downgraded further, we will consult with Department of Public Health and provide families and staff with an update.

As of 12:00 today, we are in a Red Alert on the Air Quality Index.

All outdoor practices are cancelled.

We have the following outdoor contests today.  They will be treated as follows:

1.         Cross country meet at Polo Fields.  This meet is cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

2.         Middle School Baseball Finals at Hennessey.  This game is postponed.  My office will give the schools reschedule information.

3.         Lowell vs. Burton varsity football game at Burton.  This game is postponed.  It will be rescheduled for Friday, Oct. 13 at Lowell at 3:00.  Burton is the home team, but their field is being repaired on Friday so the game will be moved to Lowell.  Burton will wear its dark home uniforms.  Lowell will wear its road white uniforms even though the game is at Lowell.  Lowell will operate the clock and Burton will provide the chain crew.

Burton and Lowell should note that if we can’t play on Friday due to Air Quality, we will attempt to move the game to Saturday at either Burton or Lowell.

We note that Burton was going to play a FS non-league game against Lowell on Friday at Lowell.  That game has been bumped as the league varsity game takes priority.

We will be back in touch tomorrow if the Air Quality Index stays high.

San Francisco has very poor air quality due to the fires in the North Bay. SFUSD has advised all school sites to keep students indoors on Oct. 12 during recess, physical education and lunch. All outdoor sports and learning activities should also be moved indoors.

These guidelines are to remain in place until the San Francisco Department of Public Health deems the air quality has improved and it is safe for children to do activities outdoors. We will continue to update principals regarding any changes.

Beginning at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 11, the air quality in San Francisco is expected to become "unhealthy for sensitive groups" (known as a code orange). At that time, schools have been advised to minimize outdoor exertion for students and staff with asthma or other health issues. Alternative activities and settings will be made available for all students at all of our schools.

The safety of your child is our primary concern. This is an important reminder to talk with our children about ways to stay safe.

Below are a few tips for talking with your child about prevention and staying safe.

* When possible, walk in pairs or groups.
* Make sure parents/guardians know where children are, where they are going and who they are with.
* If your child needs to walk alone, tell them to be VERY aware of their surroundings. NO earbuds or distractions. If a car is driving by slowly, stay away from the sidewalk.
* Do not talk to adults they don't know, especially if the adult is in a car.
* If someone approaches your child or touches them without permission, tell them to scream or yell loudly using words like "no", "help", etc. to make it clear they need help. YES, It is okay to fight back physically in these situations.
* Students should not go to the neighborhood stores before or after school.  The school does not provide supervision off our campus so please remind and encourage your child to stay on the campus before school and to go straight home after school.

Thank you for helping us keeping our children and school safe.

To date, nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrant youth have been granted DACA status, which provides work authorization and temporary relief from deportation. The program has enabled our graduates to contribute to their communities by significantly increasing opportunities for higher education and jobs. Unfortunately, on September 5, 2017, President Trump directed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to phase out and eventually end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) over two and half years. USCIS will continue to accept and process RENEWAL applications until Oct. 5, 2017 from applicants whose DACA expires between Sept. 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018. Below are resources in support of DACA students who are eligible for renewal:

Dear Presidio School Community,

I want to inform you of a situation that was brought to our attention through a parent chat group. A parent alerted other parents of an attempted kidnapping and a demonstration of a lewd sexual act toward a high school student on Anza Street, near the student’s home, at approximately 3:45 pm on August 31st .

The child is safe.  She used her cell phone to start videotaping the perpetrator. She captured the license plate and car as the man drove away.  SFPD’s Richmond district officers responded, took the report and are on the look out for the perpetrator.

Our greatest concern is for the safety of our children and incidents like this are frightening to children and families.

Thank you for helping us keeping our children and school safe.

Thomas Ekno

Principal

School locker assignments will be distributed to those students who have returned all required forms and who bring in a combination lock to school tentatively starting Tuesday, September 5 2017.

We recommend MASTER combination locks No. 1500 or 1525. For security reasons, scratch out the first two or three numbers of the serial number on the back of the lock so the combination number cannot be traced or put on the Internet to get the combination. The PTSA Student Store has plenty of locks in stock.  No key locks please.

It is important to advise your child not to bring valuables or money to school. If your child must bring these items to school, have your child leave it with his/her teacher or counselor.

Students are responsible for making sure that their locks are properly locked and that they do not give out their combination to other students.  Students are not to share lockers unless assigned to do so. Students’ locks will be cut off if found on lockers not assigned to them.

Lockers are the property of SFUSD and need to be kept clean and well maintained or you may be charged damage fines. Please note: 7th and 8th grade students may use hall lockers ONLY before and after homeroom, before and after lunch, and after school. 6th grade students may use hall lockers at teachers’ discretion. Failure of proper locker use will result in temporary loss of locker use privileges. Lockers and their contents may be searched by school administration based on reasonable suspicion at any time.

Students will not be given a locker until the parent/guardian has read and signed the locker agreement form.  Please have your child return the signed form to his/her homeroom teacher.

Thank you for your assistance!

Unfortunately, the school district is working through some bugs in the role out of the Synergy email and grade book system.  The initial assignment of activation codes was set to the first parent/guardian listed in the student contact section in the Synergy system.  In the case of multi-parent families and multi-household families (as you can imagine, many), the system will not let the school run a second activation code, yet.  The district’s IT department is working with the vendor to get this corrected.  As soon as this is fixed, either the school or district will run the activation codes and we will get them out to all parents and guardians who request and have educational rights.

We are so sorry for this inconvenience but we are working to get it resolved as soon as possible.

School starts next Monday, August 21st @ 9am.  The PTSA will be serving coffee outside the auditorium doors from 8:30-9:30 am.  The coffee has been generously donated by Peet’s @ 16th & Geary.

This is a perfect opportunity for new & returning parents to mingle and ask & answer questions.

If you are a 6th grade parent, you will escort your student to the door of the auditorium, kiss them goodbye and head outside for adult conversation.  Once your student is seated and the bell rings, their homeroom teachers will call their names and escort them to homeroom, much like they practiced at Step-Up in June. They will receive their class schedules and report to their classes throughout the day.

See you next week for coffee!

Dear SFUSD Families:

In SFUSD, most school-based after school and summer learning programs are co-sponsored by SFUSD (the ExCEL program) and partnering community based organizations. The majority are funded through city, state and federal grants. These grants are often awarded in three to five long cycles and are not guaranteed to be renewed once a grant cycle has ended. Unfortunately, the district has recently learned that it lost $3.3 million in competitive federal grants to support our after school program services to families. Please note, this is not related to federal funding cuts to after school programs but rather due to not being awarded the competitive 21st Century Learning grant.

We understand how important after school and summer learning is and we are committed to preserving after school and summer program services. In order to ensure that services continue, we will be moving more SFUSD funds into subsidizing these services and also implementing a district wide co-payment fee structure for ALL ExCEL elementary/K-8  and middle after school programs. Some programs already have a fee structure in place. The co-payment fee structure will go into effect for school year 2017-2018. In anticipation of the need for a more sustainable funding model, the Board of Education approved the implementation of a co-payment fee structure in 2014 with its resolution titled After School for All.

Each school’s ExCEL after school programs will share more specifics but in general, here are the fee structure guidelines all programs will follow:

The monthly co-payment fee will be waived for a child who is: 1) eligible for free or reduced  lunch except those fees required by a local, state or federal tuition subsidy program; 2) homeless or; 3)  in foster care.

All other children will pay a co-payment fee on a sliding scale from $50-$500/month based on income.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So close, yet so far away.  From 1910 to 1940, many Angel Island Immigration Station immigrants experienced these feelings upon reaching America, but were detained from entering San Francisco.  On May 7, 2017 (12:00-3:00), the San Francisco Public Library Main Library will celebrate Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month by spotlighting personal immigrant stories from those who went through Angel Island.

Look forward to educational games and craft activities for all ages, a display of Angel Island family histories, books, news articles, and photos. The first 50 children ages 12 and under will receive a goody bag.

Unfortunately the locker vendor was unable to make the necessary repairs to the hallway or PE lockers and the work will now have to wait until summer.  For the remainder of the school year all locker use (both in the hallways and the locker rooms) will be optional and voluntary for students.  School and classroom practices restricting backpacks in classrooms and the schoolyard will not be enforced.  Changing clothes for PE class and the use of lockers for personal storage will also be optional in the PE locker rooms.

The registration deadline has been extended by a week to April 21.

We recognize that you may be deciding next steps regarding independent and private schools. Please note that no information about assignments will be available before March 21. If you need information before your letter arrives, please email EnrollinSchool@sfusd.edu and we will do what we can to help you after March 21.

This is an update for families who submitted applications by January 13, 2017 for an SFUSD school assignment. As you know SFUSD school assignment letters, which were scheduled to be mailed out by March 17, have been delayed. The delay is due to unforeseen staffing emergencies. SFUSD’s computer system is working as designed and there is a dedicated team working 24-7 to get assignments finalized as quickly as possible given these unforeseen staffing issues. Please be assured we are double checking for accuracy every step of the way and aim to get this information to families as soon as possible.

We remain hopeful that letters might be ready by Monday. We are extremely sorry for the delay and will notify you of our progress again tomorrow morning, March 20.

We recently became aware of a serious security flaw with the locking and latching mechanism of all of our newly installed lockers in both the hallways and locker rooms.  Upon being made aware of this issue I immediately notified the SFUSD Facilities Department.  The vendor that manufactured the lockers was at school last week to investigate the situation.  The vendor has determined that each and every locker will need to be retrofitted and will perform the work during Spring Break (March 27-31, 2017).  In order for this work to occur all locks and items in the lockers will need to be removed on or before Friday, March 24, 2017.

Moving forward and until we have the issue fully resolved, all locker use (both in the hallways and the locker rooms) will be optional.  School and classroom practices restricting backpacks in classrooms and the schoolyard will no longer be enforced.  Changing clothes for PE classes and the use of lockers for personal storage will also be optional in the PE locker rooms.

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) has a policy in place that explicitly prohibits gender-based discrimination, a protection that extends to everyone, including transgender and gender expansive students.

We are proud that we were the first school district in the country to pass a policy extending safeguards to our transgender student body. We will continue to honor those policies and ensure that transgender and gender nonconforming students in the SFUSD will remain protected from discrimination, bullying and harassment.

Students, know that in California public schools, you have the right to be...

  • Free from bullying, harassment and discrimination
  • Respected when you dress and express yourself in ways that do not conform to gender stereotypes, with respect to the student dress codes
  • Affirmed by adults when you declare your pronoun and name that fits your gender identity
  • Involved in school activities, access spaces such as locker rooms and restrooms, that fits your gender identity

Dear Presidio Families:

Do you care about the success of our school and all of its students?  Great!  We knew it!  The School Site Council (“SSC”) and PTSA are hosting a joint meeting on the evening of March 9 that will include a Forum on Student Achievement.  Mark your calendars now for March 9 at 6:00 p.m.  We want to hear your ideas on how we can close the “achievement gap” by motivating and offering extra support for our lowest-performing students, while also supporting and challenging our high achieving students.  Success in middle school is an important predictor of future success in life, and we want everyone to succeed at Presidio!  Any family who can offer pathways for success, or who feels like it needs ideas and options to improve student performance, is especially encouraged to attend.

A great place to start in giving us your views is the Presidio SSC 2016-17 Community Survey.  Your participation is very important, and will help the SSC set priorities for our school.  Please fill out the online survey here:  http://tinyurl.com/2016-17SSCSurvey.  Chinese, Spanish and Russian versions are also available in the office.  We encourage every member of the community to provide us with this very valuable feedback.

Food and light refreshments will be served at the March 9 Meeting.  We will send out an RSVP form to get a headcount for ordering food, but please show up whether you remember to RSVP or not.  The more the merrier!

Thanks and see you all soon.

Best,

Presidio SSC

Presidion PTSA

About the School Site Council

A School Site Council (SSC) must be established at all San Francisco Schools.  The elected members of the SSC represent parents, students, community members, and school staff in school governance.  By state law, the SSC must oversee the site-based budgeting of categorical funds and the development and monitoring of the Balanced Score Card (BSC) and the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA).

The SSC is expected to:

  • Review and analyze student data.

  • Solicit community input, including feedback from the ELAC.

  • Assist the principal in developing the Academic Plan and school site budget.

  • Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the BSC | SPSA on an ongoing basis.

  • Approve the BSC | SPSA and the school site budget before it is submitted to the District for final review and approval.

We are excited to share that the district is transitioning from School Loop to Synergy’s Gradebook Family and Student Portals in August 2017. This transition to Synergy will provide SFUSD’s students, families, teachers, and district staff with a unified system for real-time information on classes, grades, assignments, and more. While we know change can be challenging, we firmly believe the transition to Synergy Gradebook will increase efficiency for teachers and improve access for our students and families.

What does this mean for students and families?
Starting in August 2017, students and families will log in to Synergy’s Family and Student Portals to access student information related to attendance, assignments and grading. Our transition to Synergy is a response to feedback we have heard from school communities about the need to streamline the number of online systems we use for school-family communications.  Our team will be reaching out to families via parent groups and advisory councils, email, School Messenger, school websites, and School Loop to inform them of the change and provide opportunities to learn more and prepare for the transition in August 2017.

Why are we making this change?

  • One login for attendance and grades for teachers and district staff
  • One login per family, regardless of the number of children and which school they attend
  • Greater clarification and standardization of SFUSD grading practices and policies
  • Increased security and confidentiality of student and parent information
  • Actionable real-time student performance information
  • Improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities
  • Improved translation options

What will happen with School Loop?
School Loop will continue to be used for school websites next year. However, teachers, students and families will use Synergy instead of School Loop for other communications and  information about grades and assignments.

We are confident that Synergy Gradebook is another exciting step to leverage technology to increase engagement in our school communities, enhance data integrity and security, and better position us for 21st century learning, as outlined in Vision 2025 and our Digital District Plan.

To learn more, check out the exciting G4A Launch Video, go to the Gradebook for All website (www.sfusd.edu/gradebook), or download the attached flier.

The Youth Policy Initiative serves middle school students from across San Francisco, especially low-income, students of color, and first generation college students. Furthermore, YPI engages students in local and national political issues to raise awareness about current events in society and to gear participants towards a career in politics or political activism by inspiring them to find solutions for the many issues Americans face today.

To foster these goals, in Summer 2016 we created and hosted a summer camp called the Civics and Leadership Camp.

The Civics and Leadership Camp is a FREE, week-long summer camp for rising 7th and 8th grade students from underrepresented backgrounds to learn about public speaking, leadership, and the issues facing San Francisco and the country through interactive lessons and simulations. The first camp took place in early June 2016 and the 2017 camp date is from June 5-9, 2017. Below is a video that explains more about the camp.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7i6ZpPyMVDM

Camp Details

Date: June 5-9, 2017

Time: 9:00am - 3:00pm

Location: St. Ignatius College Preparatory (2001 37th Ave)

Cost: FREE

Eligibility: Must be a current 6th or 7th grade student.

  • Learn about politics, leadership, and advocacy.
  • Understand and develop solutions to the issues in San Francisco.
  • Take part in a SF Board of Supervisors simulation.
  • Go on a field trip throughout SF, speaking with legislators and community activists.
  • Develop crucial public speaking skills.
  • Speak with a St. Ignatius College Preparatory admissions officer.
  • Meet new friends.
  • The program is FREE; Lunch will be provided.

Impact

95% of students said that their perspective of living in San Francisco changed.

90% of students gained a better sense of local government and the problems in SF today.

85% of students want to empower others to fight injustice in their communities and city.

95% of students would recommend the camp to others.

100% of the high school volunteers and adult faculty would volunteer again.

We are looking for motivated 6th and 7th grade students to participate in the 2017 Civics and Leadership Program. Would you be able to share this information to your students and families at Presidio? The link to a flyer is here and the link to apply is here. Applications are due by April 3, 2017. More information can be found on our website. If you have any questions, please email Justin at justin@youthpolicyinitiative.org or see Ms. Jenny (6th Grade) or Ms. Eckberg (7th Grade)

Wesley Johnson: The Texas Tornado is the topic as Oxford University Press historian John William Templeton leads a Black History Month service at St. Dominick's Catholic Church, 2390 Bush St. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m.

Prior to the service, Templeton presents a tour of the African-American Freedom Trail at 11 a.m. beginning from the Martin Luther King Waterfall in Yerba Buena Gardens.

Johnson came to San Francisco at age nine in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition and achieved a number of milestones at each stage of his life. Highlights include welcoming the debate team from Wiley College in Texas to San Francisco State Teachers College in 1935 for an interracial debate with S.F. State and U.C-Berkeley. The Wiley debaters were popularized in the Oprah Winfrey-produced film The Great Debaters starring Denzel Washington. Johnson also opened the Flamingo Club and Hotel Texas at 1832-6 Fillmore Street in 1943 for a 25 year run as the heart of the Fillmore nightlife scene.

The African-American Freedom Trail, as featured on NBC Bay Area and KPIX, is part of a statewide trail which documents the role of African-Americans in 500 years of California history.  More than 400 sites are in San Francisco, including three current churches and two Prince Hall lodges founded in 1852.

For more details about the tour, contact John William Templeton at 415-240-3537john@zenviba.org or book at californiablackhistory.com

As all public school districts in the State of California, including SFUSD, transitioned from STAR testing to the Smarter Balanced Assessments Consortium’s (SBAC) standardized assessments, all 9th grade applicants to Lowell were temporarily required to take the Lowell Admissions Test in the interim years 2015-16 and 2016-17.

As results from the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium’s (SBAC) standardized tests SFUSD became available, SFUSD planned to use scores from the 7th grade SBAC for SFUSD Lowell applicants for the 2017-18 school year.

However, the district has received feedback from parents that there was not sufficient notice regarding the use of SBAC tests for Lowell admissions. Therefore, the district has determined that all applicants for Lowell for the 2017-18 school year will again be required to take the Lowell Admissions Test in January. For SFUSD students who have 7th grade SBAC scores, the district will use the highest score from either SBAC or the Lowell Admissions Test in English Language Arts and Math for its admissions’ calculations.

In 2017, the test will be administered on January 4, 5, 6, and 9 and students will be assigned by last name. More details are included on the Lowell application.

This will be the final year current SFUSD students applying to Lowell will be required to take the Lowell Admissions Test. For the 2018-19 and all subsequent years, SFUSD will use 7th grade SBAC scores for SFUSD student applicants to Lowell.

Applicants for Lowell must submit both a Lowell application and an enrollment application by Friday, December 16, 2016 to either their present SFUSD middle school or to the Educational Placement Center, which is temporarily located at 655 De Haro Street.
